In response to the “Hopeless” teaser that we’ve seen coming from the Marvel NOW! initiative out of the Marvel offices, we now have an answer as to what that could be.
The last time we saw Cable, he was fighting against The Avengers and the fighting left him in a coma. This December though, Cable will reawaken and he will form the new group that will be the latest incarnation of X-Force and will be called “Cable & X-Force“.
The series will be written by Dennis Hopeless and the art will be provided by Salvador Larocca, who has just finished a long time drawing stint on Iron Man with Matt Fraction.
When Hopeless was first confronted with the idea of creating a new X-Force team, he wasn’t sure exactly what it would be about. He had previous ideas of X-Force, knowing that each time the team was reincarnated, it was a huge difference from the previous reincarnation. Knowing that, he decided to create a very different X-Force group, but it had to be led by its first leader and the man who assembled the team in the first place decades ago, Cable.
I love how Hopeless describes Cable:
“When Cable is at his best, he’s the Mad Max of the Marvel Universe; Beat to shit. Tank just above empty. Odds always against him. Whether he likes it or not, he’s going to spend the whole movie driving straight at the enemy. Mad Max meets Steve McQueen as played by the T2 Terminator: That’s my take on Cable. He doesn’t want to sit and chat. He doesn’t have time to explain the plan to you. He just wants whatever horrible thing he has to do done fast, so he can steal five minutes peace after. The fun part is surrounding him with a supporting cast who absolutely refuse to give him that peace.”
With the exception of one returning member with Cable, the new X-Force team will be comprised of totally new members. The new team will include Cable, Forge, Domino, Colossus, and Dr. Nemesis. Plus, the tone of the new series isn’t going to be focused on superhero theatrics, but will be more focused on crimes since this new team will be seen as outlaws and criminals.
The new group isn’t going to be a superhero group in the traditional sense but more of a crew, like a crew that you would get together to pull off a heist. Nobody has to get along, but they do have to work well together and they are chosen for the team for their specific skills. If you’re expecting the old X-Force then you’re in for a surprise. This new X-Force team will be pulled together to seek justice and to pull off the jobs that no one else is able to do.
