In case you haven’t heard, Marvel is reworking everything in their offices with their new Marvel NOW! initiative and among those things being reworked is “Deadpool” in November.
IGN had a chance to sit down with Brian Posehn (writer), Gerry Duggan (writer), and Tony Moore (artist), the new creators on board the “Deadpool” relaunch, and discuss what their plans are with the character and how crazy it’s going to be!
Duggan spent a little time explaining just how important it’s going to be to have Deadpool in the Marvel Universe:
“It’s an action/comedy, but I would say the DNA is in Big Trouble in Little China and Ghostbusters and those sorts of things where the stakes are high and these are real threats. If Deadpool can’t get the job done, this country is done. There are big threats.”
Moore added that he’s going to be making a few art tweaks to Deadpool as well:
“Now might be a good time to point out that when this runs, you’ll see some art that shows the tweaks he did to the costume. It’s really costume. And they’re subtle. You’ll look at it and know that it’s Deadpool, but it’s a new Deadpool that really looks great. Less pouches and less weird, tech-y gear, but more versatile sort of, “Hey, you know what? Those are magazines. Those are clips.” You get the sense that he can reach behind his back and pull out either a frying pan or a shotgun. It looks great. The idea was to take what was there and kind of streamline it a little bit and tweak it enough that it felt like a new beginning. And then keep the icon intact as much as I could, but try to have it make a little more sense so that I can really wrap my head around it when I have to draw it.”
In case you were wondering, yes, Deadpool will still have voices in his head:
“And then the voices in his head, you’ll see, are a little more organic. There’s a reason for them – not that there wasn’t before, but in ours, he gets a head injury in the first book. Somebody talks to him, but it’s not his voice. How should I say this? One of the founding fathers comes in to help him. We don’t know in the beginning if he’s hallucinating or if it’s part of his break with sanity or if this guy is really with him.”
The writing team also answer everyone’s most burning question: Will Deadpool be teaming up with anyone else in his series?
“Oh, absolutely. We have several guest stars already in the first couple issues, and we have other guest stars planned. Basically, these guys are famous heroes that will be telling Deadpool, “We don’t want your help. You are not part of us. You’re on your own, friend.” “And leave my name out of it when you tell this story.” Yeah, yeah. “I’m helping you now, but this is not a team-up.” And there will be very famous Marvel guys saying that in different ways. One guy uses a lot of “ye’s” and has a funny hat.”
It sounds like the creative team has plans for the series for many issues with several story-arcs already complete.
