The basics: Infinity is a six-issue series starting in August, from writer Jonathan Hickman and artists Jim Cheung, Jerome Opeña and Dustin Weaver; with Cheung illustrating issue #1.
The story is set to unfold on two fronts: Earth, which Thanos has targeted for an attack, and outer space, where the Avengers are confronting the threat of The Builders, which has been building in the Avengers series.
Infinity is really a two-part story. Half of it takes place in the Marvel Universe; the other half takes place on Earth. The bigger scale of the story will draw in characters from across the Marvel Universe, with the Inhumans stated to have a VERY vital role in the Marvel Universe after Infinity.
And Thanos has been primed for a big story ever since the blockbuster movie The Avengers hit theaters, stealing the credits with his surprise cameo and we know that he’s had his eyes on Earth for a while with the secrets revealed in this years’ Free Comic Book Day story. Also, Thanos isn’t alone and he’s bringing his own army to Earth with his new general, Corvus Glave, and his allies, such as Black Dwarf, Ebony Maw, Proxima Midnight, and Supergiant, all never before seen new characters.
As we’ve learned, Thanos will have his allies, but will the Avengers have any allies? Allies may be a kind term to describe them because the last time we saw these aliens, they almost successfully completed their “secret invasion”! That’s right, the Skrulls will be showing up during the Infinity Event as allies to the Avengers and to Earth. How they’ll be helping remains a mystery for the series, but it’ll be interesting to see them back.
There will be several tie-ins that will support the main Infinity storyline. Similar to how Fear Itself was presented, Infinity’s confirmed tie-ins include Captain Marvel, Avengers Assemble, Thunderbolts, Scarlet Spider, and Avengers and New Avengers.
The Avengers tie-ins will focus on the outer space story, with New Avengers picking things up back on Earth. If you just want to read the Space Opera elements, you can just get the Space Opera issues. If you just want the Thanos stuff, you can just read the Thanos stuff.
There will also be 2 mini series spinning off of the Infinity Event! First is Infinity: The Hunt, which is a modern interpretation of the classic Contest of Champions series that Marvel did years ago. This series is written by Matt Kindt with art by Steven Sanders and will focus on a contest of the Earth’s best and brightest young super heroes that are divided into teams. The coaches of the teams? Hank Pym, She-Hulk, and Wolverine! The contest will include students from various schools all over the world and several from schools that we’re familiar with, such as the Jean Grey School from the pages of Wolverine and the X-Men!
Also, when the super heroes are away, what better time to plan…a heist! That’s right, in September, we’ll see the new miniseries Infinity: Heist, written by Frank Tieri and drawn by Al Barrionuevo. This miniseries focuses on Iron Man’s rogues gallery as they plan to steal the biggest score in the Marvel Universe – Stark Enterprises! The series will bring back and update a lot of the villians that make up Iron Man’s rogues, such as Spymaster, Blizzard, The Unicorn, and more!
Last, but not least, we’ll see the return of the Mighty Avengers! Remember Luke Cage? Well, he’s been absent from the Avengers for a while to be with and take care of his family, but that changes this September and he’s called upon to lead the Earth team of Avengers against Thanos! Cage won’t be alone, though, because he’s joined by The Falcon, The Blue Marvel, Superior Spider-Man, She-Hulk, Ronin, and others! Written by Al Ewing with art by Greg Land, we’ll see if this team of Mighty Avengers is a match for Thanos and his allies!
Now is the time to add Infinity, its tie-ins, miniseries, and the new Mighty Avengers series to your pull list!
