Avengers Arena #5 Review

Issue 5 finally gives us a look at Kid Briton and the group from the Braddock Academy. While I’ve been enjoying the first four issues, Arcade apparently has not…something about not enough killing. He decides to up the ante. For the next 24 hours, Murder World’s environment will become much more harsh and uninviting to the students. Arcade is not without mercy, though. He has set up safe zones, one of which has food, supplies and water. Now it’s a matter of deciding who will get there first.

Hopeless finally decides to flesh out the characters from the Braddock Academy, starting with Kid Briton. Kid Briton’s powers are similar to that of Captain Britain (mostly because he’s an alternate version of him). This means that the more confidence he has, the more invincible he is. Back at the Braddock Academy he has buckets of confidence. This comes from bullying other students, having a beautiful girlfriend, and getting some action on the side. As the Braddock Academy students make their way to the safe zone, we get to see where loyalties lie. Kid Briton gets a huge blow to his confidence when Katy (Apex) decides to confront him with some tasty information.

Hopeless also makes sure to give readers the answer as to who attacked Reptil and possibly others on the island. The answer makes sense and will make for an interesting story as more pieces to the puzzle are revealed. I think Hopeless made a smart move here in revealing the attacker, rather than keeping it under wraps for too long.

This book continues to use similar ideas that you might find in Lord of the Flies, Battle Royale, Hunter Games, etc. The great thing is that the book doesn’t just rely on this concept and stop there. It expresses similar ideas and questions that readers are possibly feeling. It takes, and in a way, develops characters that you wouldn’t normally see on a team together. The main thing this book has done successfully is elevate Arcade from some silly villain into someone to actually fear.
