Batman Incorporated #8 Reviews by Randy Young
This was a book I knew I had to get. This was one of the few times I was glad I’d seen the spoilers. I was there for the beginning, so it was only fitting I was there for the ending. The problem was, I had to get through seven issues to properly review this book. So what you’re about to read is really a review of the last eight issues of Batman Inc.
I feel if I’d read these books monthly I’d be banging my head against the wall in frustration. Grant Morrison has a grand scale story to tell and it’s best seen when you read the story as a whole, not parts. It’s also obvious where Morrison was going with this story from the start (of course I have the hindsight to see that now, but the pieces were already there). Morrison’s Batman story is one that he has completely ignored the fact that there was a huge reboot at DC. His story is a continuation of everything that has gone on with almost no alterations that I can see. The interactions between Damien and Alfred and Dick are perfect. They make me long for the days when Dick was still Batman and had Damien by his side, learning from him. The sense of danger here is major and one could only hope that all the foreshadowing was not going to come to fruition. Spoiler alert: it does. It is a sad moment. There was so much promise for this character that had his life cut short. One can only imagine what will be the repercussions for the actions in this issue.
Chris Burnham is the best Frank Quitely imitator out there. His work is uber detailed. He spares no expense in giving us backgrounds when they are necessary. He sacrifices the backgrounds at times to focus on the art that is most needed for that page and it works. He is successful in making Damien seem like a formidable warrior when needed and a 10 year old boy at other times. His art is the perfect complement to Grant Morrison’s writing.

First repercussion for me is that I am finally dropping the rest of the Bat titles I was reading. I was a huge fan of Snyder before the reboot. That has diminished over the last 18 months. The only book I was enjoying was Tomasi’s Batman and Robin. With Damien dead the interesting part of that story is gone. Oh well. There are a lot of great titles from Marvel and this will allow me to move my budget over to some of the great new things coming from Dark Horse and Dynamite.
Totally get what you mean. Better to spend the money what you actually like and want.
I’ll be making some changes to my pull list soon as well!
