Constantine #1 Review by Randy Young
With this issue, John Constantine fully becomes a member of the DC Universe. Gone is the strong language, drugs, and sex of Hellblazer. This John Constantine is slightly more likable but only slightly.
Constantine has a mission. He has to find this long lost magical artifact before anyone else does. Why? This artifact happens to be able to allow its possessor the ability to know where all things of the occult are before anyone else. Constantine can’t allow such a powerful item to fall into the wrong hands.
Lemire gives us a complex character in John Constantine. Constantine is not the world’s most powerful magician. He’s not even in the upper tier. What he can do is manipulate magic in ways that they help him in situations. While Lemire wants you to root for Constantine, he doesn’t want you to like him. Constantine’s actions might be considered cowardly or cruel at times. The thing is, Constantine knows that the life he leads is dangerous but he’s the best option for preventing evil magic from becoming too powerful so he’s more than willing to stay alive however possible.
You get to see firsthand some of those questionable choices in this issue.
You also get to see some new takes on mystical characters we haven’t gotten to see before in the New52 universe.
Constantine won’t be for everybody. It is a captivating read that will have you wanting to pick up the next issue if you try the first one.
