FF #4 Review by Randy Young
The Future Foundation is not happy with the Fantastic Four’s choice of replacement protectors of the Earth and guardians of the Baxter building and all within. Alex Power (of the Power Pack) is not happy with Scott Lang (Ant-Man). Lang has made the decision to take down Doctor Doom. Alex thinks it’s because of Doom’s hand in Lang’s daughter’s death and that they don’t have the right to say whether Doom should live or die. Meanwhile, the moloids aren’t too happy with The Jen (their name for Jen Walters, aka She-Hulk). They are smitten with her and don’t wish her to share her affections with other men.
Fraction skillfully crafts a serious layer to this book that is overshadowed by a much lighter tone. The serious tone of the book comes in the form of Scott Lang deciding that Doom is too dangerous to keep around. When Alex tries to present his case against this attack, Lang puts his foot down. This storyline is not the main focal point of this issue, but what little is shown is sure to play a big role in the story later on.
Hilarity ensues when the moloids enlist the help of Bentley 23 to ruin The Jen’s date with Wyatt Wingfoot. From the first unsuccessful effort, it is apparent that they are going to screw up every time. All lightheartedness leaves the room by the end of this issue. It’s cute that Bentley 23 is going to lie on his bed and sulk over not being very evil. The serious comes back full force, though, when Medusa presents Bentley with a frightening piece of advice.
Mike Allred’s art is not for everyone. His characters are very posed and there isn’t a lot of fluid movement to his characters in panel. This doesn’t detract me from the book. I think that one of Allred’s strengths is his ability to draw comedy. The scenes that are supposed to be funny are enhanced by the art. I personally think his She-Hulk is drawn a bit bulkier and strong but keeps her sexiness. The end result is that this book isn’t hurt by Allred’s art as much as it’s helped by it.
Look for our Marvel Now! video coming soon and see why I recommend this book as one of the best books coming out of this Marvel movement. Pick up this issue and find the previous ones at Excalibur before they’re all gone!
