Guardians of the Galaxy #1 Review by Randy Young
Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Art by Steve McNiven
Marvel’s much anticipated book of 2013 has arrived and it does so with a bang!
Bendis brings together the once but now not-so-motley crew of Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket “don’t call me” Raccoon, Groot and Drax. This time round they happen to find Iron Man out in space. He’s decided to take Peter Quill up on his offer to join them for some space adventuring.
In the 0.1 issue, we found that Peter was born of a brief encounter between and Earth woman and a marooned alien king. Peter grew up without his father and always resented him. In issue one, we see that Peter has met his father by this time and they are not that close. Peter would rather be out in space and his father would rather him be home doing his princely duties.
Peter’s father also has some important news for him. In order for Earth to fully develop and become a true intergalactic power, it must be left alone. A ban has been placed on Earth in which no aliens are aloud to have contact with Earth. Sounds like a recipe for disaster, right? That’s what Peter thinks as well.
Meanwhile, Iron Man has run across a particularly nasty ship of Badoons. Things aren’t going exactly as planned but that’s okay. The Guardians show up just in time to give him a helping hand.
They realize that this ship was just one of many that had set its sights on Earth, mostly due to this ban that has been placed on the planet.
Gamora offers up a chilling theory as to why his father even cared to inform Peter of this ban.
Bendis gives us a solid starter issue, filled with intrigue and action. In order for this series to be successful, it will be imperative that Bendis curbs his need to have characters standing around talking. This is a space story, so it should be big and grand. He also has the talents of McNiven on art and the standing thing is a total waste of McNiven’s talent.
Finally, if you’re a fan of the previous series by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning (I was a HUGE fan), you will be pleased to know that they acknowledge Star-Lord’s previous demise. You will be enraged to know that it is mentioned in passing, as if to say, “We didn’t ignore it but that’s all we are going to say.” If that’s the attention they are going to give to the previous series, we’ll never find out what happened in the Cancerverse.
This book is lots of fun and will lead into a big late summer event called Infinity. If you’re going to pick that up then you’ll want to get this book. If you’re a fan of the cosmic characters, you’ll want to pick this up. If you’re just looking for a great read, you’ll want to pick this up.
