Sex #1 Review by Randy Young
Let’s talk about sex, baby. No, I’m not referring to the Salt ‘N’ Pepa song. I’m talking about the new series by Joe Casey.
This book is about Simon Cooke, formerly the costumed crime fighter, The Armored Saint. Cooke is returning to Saturn City after disappearing some time ago. He’s no longer a superhero and is looking to run his business he neglected while fighting crime. He obviously isn’t comfortable with his new role.
Casey also introduces us to a few villains. The villains didn’t wait to tighten their grip on the city when Cooke disappeared. It looks like at this point they are trying to size each other up and to see who will ultimately be the top dog.
Casey’s Simon Cooke is an introspective character so far. While finding himself in a seedier situation, he is more focused on thinking about what it was that caused him to give up being a superhero.
I am unfamiliar with Piotr Kowalski’s art, but I do enjoy it. It is slightly gritty and the people look realistic. That is to say, he’s not a hulking man with glasses and a hunch to disguise himself. He looks like an everyday guy. I much prefer that style of art.
There is sexual, adult material in this book. HOWEVER, it is not the focus of this issue by any means. I can’t say it won’t be more of a focal point in later issues, but it is no worse than something you might find in a book like The Boys (actually, it’s less offensive than that). This book won’t be for everyone, but to not give this book a chance just because of its title will be shortsighted. I thoroughly enjoyed this introductory issue.
