Superior Spider-Man #6 Review by Randy Young
This whole Doc-Spidey thing is coming to a head. The story that I thought could go for some time is probably going to end much sooner.
Screwball is back and Jester is along for the ride. The problem is their target is not somebody who will take their shenanigans lightly. Doc-Spidey has no interest in helping until he gets shamed into it.
This book is about bullying. There are no subtleties here. Character after character is shown bullied throughout the issue.
Octavius has put up with a lifetime of bullying and now that he has Spider-Man’s powers, he is exacting revenge. This is his downfall. He had been living Peter’s life so effectively. He was balancing all aspects perfectly. However, he has anger issues. These anger issues are caught on tape and all the people Octavius wouldn’t want to take notice are doing just that.
I’ll take a moment now to state my thoughts on what Slott might be doing here. I think that in recent years Spider-Man has gotten too far away from the character he was. He was a loner who was hated more than loved. In recent years, he’s become an Avenger and admired by everybody. I think that Slott is using Octavius to destroy Spider-Man’s credibility so that when Peter does regain control he’ll have a huge uphill struggle to redeem his name. If it happens, great. If not, I’ll be interested to see where exactly Slott does take it.
Love or hate the idea of Doc-Spidey, this book is getting incredibly intriguing. This is the best Spidey story that’s been told in years.
