The Sixth Gun #29 Review and The Sixth Gun: Sons of the Gun #1 Review by Randy Young
The Sixth Gun might be the best comic that most people are not reading. This book is a mixture of western and horror. Issue 29 is almost a filler that introduces us to characters that will be playing an important role In future books. Though it might be a filler, it is far from dull and meaningless. In this issue, Becky and Sinclair have been through a lot recently and have managed to escape certain doom, but not without some losses. They are reunited with old comrades and enemies this issue. Where things go from here is a mystery. Becky discovers some chilling new powers provided by the gun that might be changing her for the worse. Missy Hume is forced to seek help from the last person she wants to.
Sons of the Gun #1 is a new series (limited or ongoing?) that focuses on Hume’s gang of bloodthirsty characters that had control of the guns before they fell into the hands of Becky and Sinclair.
This issue is mainly focusing on “Bloodthirsty” Bill Sumter and what happens after Hume is captured and the gang is forced to split up. Bunn is successful in not only making Bill seem like a killer, but a complex person struggling with himself and his task at hand. Churilla (previously of The Secret History of D.B. Cooper from Oni Press) handles the art and does a great job of giving us a style close to that of Hurtt.
Sons of the Gun is a must read for those who have been reading the original series. It is also a great book that you can pick up and start reading the first issue and not be completely lost as it is set in the past. I would recommend that you seek out the trades of the original series so you can enjoy what a few of us already know is a spectacular series.
