Thor: God of Thunder #5 Review by Randy Young
Thor: God of Thunder is currently being hailed as one of the strongest restarts of the Marvel Now! movement. This issue is a great example of why. Aaron has been giving us three stories in one: Thor of the past, current, and future. The events of this issue are a culmination of decisions all three versions of Thor have made. These decisions have not necessarily been good.
Gorr has been an incredible addition to Thor’s mythos. There are two parts of this issue that I particularly enjoyed. The first was the concept that Gorr might be more susceptible to the attacks of human than he is to a god. This is a bit of a reversal from what we usually see. Man usually plays the role of a gnat when involved in the goings on of gods. Here Gorr almost seems weak when pitted against man. It could be that he was just caught off guard but it seemed more than that.
With this being the next to the last issue of this story arc, I doubt that we’ll see a more final answer to this. I’m okay with that though, the situation that it was presented in played out and helped move the story along. The second great moment of the issue was when the two Thors meet. It was something that most of us probably already recognized, but it was nice to hear Thor vocalize it all the same.
As far as the art goes, let me say that I’m a fan of Ribic’s work. That being said, I’ve realized something about Ribic. In the world of George Perez and Rob Liefeld, he is a Rob Liefeld. No, he doesn’t have issues with drawing the human body, giving it too many veins or a squinty nose or eyes or changing designs from panel to panel. He is a Rob Liefeld because he focuses all of his detail on the characters and none on the background. I would love to see if Ribic’s talents go beyond that of drawing incredible character designs.
This issue was a great reminded why this book has garnered so much buzz.
