Wolverine #1 (2013) Review

As much as I don’t like Wolverine and I didn’t want to like this issue, it’s off to a solid start. This is due in no small part to the duo of Paul Cornell and Alan Davis.

Paul Cornell doesn’t give us anything new when it comes to Wolverine. He doesn’t try to create some secret history that we somehow never knew before. He doesn’t give us the berserker either. He instead takes the Wolverine that has a code of honor and golden heart and puts him in a situation where he uses both as we’d expect him to do. Only, things don’t exactly work out for Wolverine. Cornell gives us, as of right now, a mysterious twist. This is one that I’d suspect few people saw coming.

Alan Davis is as sharp now as he was 20 years ago. His facial features (be it the scared child or angered Wolverine), the details that go into his panels (Wolverine’s incinerated body), and action sequences are captivating. The one minor detail I would complain about is that the woman we are introduced to (Tomomatsu) looks an awful lot like Maria Hill. In fact, I thought it was her until I read her name. You’d think they could make the female law enforcement look a little different. Davis’ art is nowhere near the cheesecake art that you’ll find on the Savage Wolverine title. If you want sexy women, read that book. The problem is, when you get past the cheesecake, there is very little else that Cho excels at drawing. Certainly not his men like Wolverine. With it being a title about a male, it becomes rather difficult to look at the art. Davis’ art is the exact opposite. It’s very distinctive but at the same time it’s crisp and the characters are realistic while still having some exaggerated features.

Wolverine #1 will be a title that sells out. I’d recommend picking up a copy before it does.
