If you’ve never heard of Nick Spencer, you’ve been living under a rock, or maybe on the moon. He’s the writer of fan-favorite Image Comics series “Morning Glories” and has went on to write for Marvel Comics with stints on “Iron Man 2.0” and “Ultimate Comics: X-Men“.
While Morning Glories is still continuing, it looks like Spencer is stepping back from corporate comics and taking another stab at creator-owned comics with October’s release of “Bedlam” from Image Comics with artist Riley Rossmo.
“Bedlam” follows Fillmore Press, a formerly serial killer that went by the name Madder Red, as he now lives a more reformed life in the same city that he used to terrorize, Bedlam.
So he goes from killing to not killing? Spencer explains,
“Fillmore Press was once Madder Red, a serial killer and criminal overlord who terrorized the city of Bedlam. Something happened, he got better. When we first meet Fillmore, he’s living in a small, run-down studio apartment on the wrong side of town. It’s a far cry from the murderous glamour of his old life. Where he was once an almost ubiquitous symbol of the city, he seems far removed from the action now, unrecognized and unnoticed without his mask and with the passage of time. That, obviously, ain’t gonna last for long.”
The premise sounds interesting and the art looks great. To read more about Spencer’s plans for the new series and to see some preview pages, click here.
