Another solid issue. Marko and his mother finally make their way back to the ship as the egg/planet begins to hatch. Gwendolyn and The Will catch up to the lovers. Craziness ensues. Close curtains.

Vaughan’s story is deceptively simple. It is a fairly straightforward story that I’m pretty sure many of us have read before. The thing about Vaughan though, is that he can take this simple story and make it incredibly complex. Characters are more than what they first appear to be. Flashbacks reveal depths to the characters that make the characters more complete. There is not a word on the page that is wasted.

In this particular issue, Vaughan gives us two things in particular that I love. I love that we get to see something more about this “trashy” romance novel that Alana has been reading. If this novel was just what it appears to be, it would be the simple motivation behind our two lovers’ actions. Vaughan decides to make it more than what it appears to be and I love what is revealed. The second tasty treat Vaughan gives us is more information into the particulars of the ship. We knew when the ship took off that it was a tree. We knew that the ship had the ability to provide its crew with what they needed. We did not know how other vessels were able to register the ship. It was a small little piece of information that was just, well, cool.

Alana shines in this issue. Her panic with the baby was hysterical. Her knowledge of tactical measures was impressive. I assumed she was just a lowly guard but she proves to be much more knowledgeable and dangerous.

Fiona Staples provides some of the most gorgeous art of any comic series out there today. I love her ability to give each character such personality through her art alone. She was simply perfect on this issue.

A special acknowledgement should be given for Fonografiks lettering. The placement of the words is so unique and I enjoy the finished product quite a lot. This is just another little thing that makes this series so different from others out there.
