There’s been a lot of news recently about the new Marvel NOW! initiative, with a recent teaser revealing “Lightning“, then leaving fans wondering what it was all about.

Well, let the speculation end. Marvel is relaunching “Thunderbolts” with writer Daniel Way and artist Steve Dillon in December. This is no ordinary group of heroes being brought together, though. The “team”, put loosely, will include Red Hulk, Elektra, Deadpool, Venom, and The Punisher and isn’t an official government team, and they’re going after the bad guys in a big way.

Writer Daniel Way explains:

“Yes; this is not “another X-Force.” This is also not a covert ops team. When the Thunderbolts hit a target, they’ll do so in the loudest way possible. Separately, on their own, these characters were waging open-ended campaigns. Why were they on their own? Why has no one stepped in to help them? Would not the world be a better place if organized crime was eliminated, or The Hand summarily wiped out? Whether due to indifference, moral quandary or political agenda, there are pockets of infection throughout the MU that have been allowed to fester and grow. This team of Thunderbolts exists to cut out that infection, wherever it is found. They do not recognize boundaries or borders, be they moral, political or geographical. They can and will strike anyone, at any time, without warning. They are the consequence of evil deeds, pure and simple.”

Newsarama sat down with the series editor, Jordan White, and this is what he had to say about the new series,

“Unlike the most recent Thunderbolts, this group is not working for any government program — this is Red Hulk’s team, to do with as he sees fit. In case you forgot, big red’s secret ID is that of General “Thunderbolt” Ross, a well-respected military official who the world thinks was KIA. Well, just because he can’t be part of the American Armed Forces doesn’t mean he can’t put together an armed force of his own (in fact, as a side note, I’d considered suggesting we call the book “Thunderbolt’s” with a possessive, but decided I would be laughed out of editorial if I mentioned it). And again, if you look at the crew ol’ T-Bolt has put together, you can get a sense of the kind of things he might be looking to do with them. They’re a team of loners, but all highly trained and highly skilled as either mercenaries or soldiers. This is a black ops dream team… or perhaps red ops, as the case may be. They’re all characters with their own very particular morality, who do the things they do because they believe in them. They believe they are doing right, even if the world around them might not. Now that they’re working together, they can set their sights even higher… and the world had better look out, because they won’t take no for an answer.”
