Have you ever wondered just who would win in a fight between your favorite superheroes or even your favorite super villains? There has been all kinds of speculation over the years about people’s favorite superheroes and super villains fighting against each other and what the outcomes would be from those fights. In a true fight to the death, who would win between Spider-Man and Batman? Who would win in a true fight to the death between Thor and Superman? This kind of speculation has gone on for so long that we are going to see the answer to it coming up this December from BOOM! Studios in a new comic book series called “Deathmatch” written by Paul Jenkins and drawn by Carlos Magno.

In this new series, Jenkins has the unique liberty of creating an entire universe of superheroes and super villains that wake up to find that they are being held in a prison somewhere by a very powerful force that has them trapped in an arena to fight to the death.

“A group of heroes (“Supes”), villains (“Fears”) and those in-between (“Neuts”) wake up to find they are being held in a prison somewhere. They are being subdued by some kind of all-powerful, light-based captor, but they are given very little information about why they are there, save for the fact they each must go into a televised arena and face off against each other. Once they enter the Deathmatch arena, no matter their feelings before they enter, they are somehow persuaded to fight to the death. The whole thing is a big mystery but on the face of it, it seems they’re here for someone’s amusement.”

Both Jenkins and Magno have been given free reign from BOOM! Studios to create an entire universe and deliver a new concept without any type of restraints from editorial mandates or any other such foolishness.

Jenkins explains that he has tons of ideas for superheroes and likes the idea that a superheroes powers should help to suggest what the story will be about and what the situations for the superhero will be about as well.

Jenkins also explains that you’re never going to see the fruition of any of your ideas concerning a fight between Batman or Spider-Man or even a fight between Thor and Superman because there’s just too much red tape involved with those characters since they are owned by corporate entities. Jenkins now has an opportunity to create an entirely new universe of new characters that are very similar to the superheroes and super villains that we’ve grown up knowing about but these particular characters will be placed in an environment where they have to fight to the death to live and Jenkins has partnered with BOOM! Studios to create this series because of the total creative freedom that is involved.

Jenkins wraps up the interview at CBR by leaving us with this short teaser:

“Want to know who would win between Batman and Superman or between Batman and Spider-Man? Well, frankly, you probably won’t get to see it happen in your lifetime. We’re doing it in “Deathmatch.” Every page is a surprise. Everything counts and the deaths have meaning forever. You want these characters to be real people and for their deaths to feel difficult, sad or even uplifting and heroic. You want it because you talk about it for hours in message boards or in your local comic store. You can thank me later.”
