Avengers #7 Review

The White Event is upon us. The beginning of this issue is confusing. I was a little annoyed with Jonathan Hickman for his overly complex story that was offering no insight into what exactly was going on. Then I got to page 14. Justice. Cipher. Spitfire. Starbrand. These names turned the light on in my head. Then a few other things clicked for me. This character that had been created in the first story arc was called Nightmask. The cover to this issue should’ve been familiar. The name White Event should’ve made sense sooner.

Welcome to New Universe, or newuniversal.

Hickman has just brought the New Universe imprint into the Marvel Universe. He is one clever, clever man. His clues were right there in front of us and many might not have put two and two together until he gave you the answer.

This concept is an interesting one. It should’ve gone a certain way but instead went pear shaped. Now the Avengers have big issues with a very powerful being.

If you’re unfamiliar with the New Universe, you may want to check out Warren Ellis incredibly successful relaunch in which he called it newuniversal. His series was ultimately ended due to him losing his computer files. Many people were upset because the series was a solid reimagining. If there is any writer who can mimic Warren Ellis, Hickman is that writer. The fact that he is now handling these characters is absolutely perfect.

I’m aware I should probably tell you that this is a spoiler, but most of you who get this book will already have read it and some of you won’t know exactly what is going on so I’m spelling it out for you. Others might not pick up Avengers but liked either incarnation of the New Universe and should be made aware that it is out there again for their enjoyment. Whichever group you’re in, I’ll both apologize and saying “you’re welcome.”
