The Walking Dead #109 Review by Randy Young
At first glance, the cover of this issue and the location make it look like it’s taking a break from the current storyline to look at how Maggie is handling life on the Hilltop. That thought is quickly quieted when Jesus shows up.
Jesus is there to inform the group of Rick and Ezekiel’s plan to take down Negan and to recruit able bodies to add numbers to their forces. When Jesus has his one-on-one with Maggie, he tells her to keep things quiet and only talk to certain people but the number of people he talks to doesn’t exactly look like he’s trying to keep things too quiet. Gregory isn’t too keen on the idea but Jesus didn’t expect him to be.
There were three powerful moments in this book. Brianna’s conversation with Maggie is chilling yet endearing. It’s nice to see how people can still act civil in a world that is no longer that way.
Next was the interaction with Rick and Spencer. Most might have thought I’d say his talk with Carl, Michonne and Andrea but that was a run of the mill conversation. His talk with Spencer was intense and could really prove to be a problem in the future. Rick made the decision to leave people in the dark and appear submissive to Negan and that might not have been the best idea when things are over and done.
Finally, Kirkman worked his magic and made everyone question just how much Ezekiel could trust Dwight. Meanwhile he introduces us to a character everyone swears you can trust and then, BAM, betrayal.
This is one of the things that makes The Walking Dead so good to read. The unexpected gets you every time.
