Two issues in and I’m still loving this relaunch. It’s a different kind of story than those Remender was telling. Humphries has put together a team consisting of Psylocke, Storm and Puck to find a little girl that is being held captive/protected by Spiral. Meanwhile, the good Fantomex and the female Fantomex, Cluster, are spending some quiet time on a date in Budapest.

Humphries has given this book a perfect pacing. He reveals just enough information about Spiral to give her some character some depth, where she’s no longer a straight up villain but a complex protector of this mysterious child. It’s the perfect story element to give her so that it makes sense to have her on the team (as she’s already been solicited as being part of).

The hero team has good charisma together. I’m not a particular fan of Puck, but his banter and instant bonding with Storm and Psylocke is enjoyable. This version of Psylocke might be my favorite in a long time. She’s trying to redeem her sins from the past and has an edge about herself due to the betrayal of a lover.

Speaking of lovers, I should point out that the fact the two Fantomexes dating each other is about as creepy as you can get. I’m not sure how Humphries came up with this idea, but it intrigues me. Especially because revealing more will help us know what happened with Psylocke six months ago.

Ron Garney’s art is best when the inker uses tight lines on it. Thankfully Danny Miki and Scott Hanna use that technique. His mohawk Storm is a particular favorite of mine. The storytelling that comes from his art is top notch.

My one issue is that I’m not sure what Humphries is doing with Bishop. I kind of like him as a villain. It seems that Humphries is almost writing an out for Bishop and that we could likely see him as a hero and part of this team later on. I hope I’m wrong, but fear I’m not.

This is still a book that I highly recommend you run over to the comic shop and pick up, along with the first issue.
