Secret Avengers #1 Review

I was not exactly excited about this book when I read the setup and after reading this issue I still have my doubts. Nick Spencer is a big part of the problem. He does his best Brian Michael Bendis here and comes up way short. The witty banter between characters is flat and the sidebar comments are somewhat annoying. When you read certain ideas and concepts from creators like Warren Ellis or Jonathan Hickman you can see that these men have a vast imagination and their wild ideas give the reader an explanation. Spencer tries to create some “super secret spy toys” and they just seem…weak. Bullets that release a healing factor so that you don’t actually kill somebody? Wow, really? That is a new way to keep the “good guys don’t kill” belief intact while having characters shoot people in the head. These implants that give the heroes selective memory is a little muddled. However, they seem more like a convention that will be used to cover up events that will be impossible to explain when you compare it to the rest of continuity.

Spencer does manage to deliver some good as well. The last page is a pretty cool concept. His story had a good pace to it that kept me wanting to see what happens next.

Luke Ross gives us some pretty good art. Oddly, I think my favorite art is when he shows the crumbs all over the table where Hawkeye has sloppily been eating the scones, but Black Widow’s side is clean. That little detail got a chuckle from me.

This is a tough book for me. I don’t think I can outright recommend it, but it will appeal to some people. Some people will enjoy that it looks much more like the movie version of the Avengers than the comic book version. This review isn’t meant to tell you to not get the book, but to tell you what I think of it. Give it a try and tell me what you think.
